One of seven illustrated envelopes in the collection with it's little "gag", perfectly encapsulates the themes and anxieties of the 80 drawings in the Taylor Morse collection.
Judging by the irony in which we are clearly meant to take the "Welcome" on the door mat, they were not always received enthusiastically. Not being addressed in full may lead one to believe Wesley occasionally hand delivered the drawings.
Directly behind Avonne's name is the address plate "414", this is the apartment on Madison Avenue where she lived at the time of the drawings. Ziegfeld would often arrange for his star girls to be placed in apartments close to the New Amsterdam, and Avonne was rapidly emerging from the mass of anonymous chorus girls. In 1922 she was featured on the cover of JUDGE magazine and voted the prettiest girl in the Follies of that year.
